Dear Members,

Yesterday we began transferring all data from the old site to an uprated version:

1. To view the new site correctly you must clear your browser cache.

2. To Login please hover over the 'Access' link on the navigation bar, and click login.

The new site allows the following:

- Automatic avatar picture uploading (no more picture resizing required - the site software does it for you)

- Automatic image uploading in posts (no more picture resizing required - the site software does it for you)

- YouTube embed capability (instructions to follow)

- Cleaner page interface, post listing, and navigation

- Redesigned 'Technical' & 'Buyers Guides' Sections

- Tidier navigation bar

- Latest IE8/FireFox/Chrome browsers compatible

- Search engine friendly urls

- Member Profile Page updated to include 'cars owned' categories

- Clearer sponsor listing page with location map

- The 'Classifieds' and 'News' Sections have now been created on seperate pages (accessible via the navigation bar) to create a shorter homepage listing.

- When clicking the Details/My Posts (All My Posts/Replies/Topics I Started) functions via the navigation bar, the displayed data will be automatically either Forum or Section specific, depending what page you are viewing when you click to display.

- When clicking the Latest/Posts functions (via the navigation bar), the displayed data will be automatically either Forum or Section specific, depending what page you are viewing when you click to display.

- When clicking the Latest/Topics functions (via the navigation bar), the displayed data will be automatically either Forum or Section specific, depending what page you are viewing when you click to display.

No doubt there will be some bugs which we will iron out over the coming days.

Please note: you may be experiencing missing pictures or avatars in posts, but these will gradually return as the site re-caches on your machine.

Now that we have broken the back of the upgrade/transfer we will whittle off a host more amendments over the coming weeks:

- Picture post uploading feature to be easier to use

- Avatar profile uploading feature to be easier to use

- Profile set-up page to be easier to amend/use

- Further tweaked final post display pages and functionality

- New Models Section

- New Classifieds Section

- New News Section

- Further improved navigation bar and crumbtrails

In the meantime any issues let me know.

Kind Regards,

Brian

Hi Brian - looks good, nice and clean. The youtube and pic insertion should be good too.

Just one suggestion - is there any way of putting the shortcuts like "posts since last visit" along the bottom of the page, as per the old setup? This is what I generally use when I visit the forum, but now access is slower.....via two selections under a dropdown.

Looks good. Likewise, on the posts since last visit is it possible to amend it to show by threads rather than individual posts. That way you would avoid the repeats and condense the material?

Cheers

Hi Nigel,

For the next round of amendments we wil try and fuse the topic search with the post search to make a shorter 'Latest' menu, displying thread data instead of all the posts, but there is no clear way to show you where exactly the posts were made from the last visit on those displayed threads. We are working on the code though to do that, but I've not seen it done on a forum before. But it's worth trying, as like you, I find having a list of posts generated on the same thread abit awkward.

In the meantime, we have added a similarish function - on the Nav Bar if you hover over 'Latest', 'Topics', 'Last 1 Day' (and click), when on the homepage a page will be generated displaying a list of threads that were last contributed to in descending order.

Cheers,

BT

Hi Steve,

Traditionally this forum has always seen a huge amount of guests. I always wondered if bizarelly that section encouraged them to remain as guests as other were. So by removing that feauture lets see if the lurkers sign up. So that feature will not be present for the coming months, and I'll monitor new membership to see what happens.

Kind Regards,

Brian

Thanks Brian

The topics listing does the trick.

Hi Brian, on pistonheads you can serach for threads that are new or have been updated since your last visit, and for those that are updated it shows a thick blue line intimating where you had previously viewed up to. Is this what you mean?

Hi Nigel,

We concentrated on creating a cleaner interface which I believe we have achieved. Unfortunately there had to be some casualties to achieve that. If there is enough demand for that function to be listed totally seperately I will place it on the homepage. I do hate clutter though

We will try and smooth out the dropdown links over the coming weeks, hopefully that will help too.

Re. the Pistonheads display of the topic start point on a thread (when searching), I would like something better than that - more clear to follow, as it were. What I require has not been done thus far, but we are working on it.

Cheers,

BT

Brian, if I try to PM it comes up with an error (in true Maserati style!) when I click send, and then logs me out. It also wont let me email.

Hi Nigel,

Italian electrics indeed - I tested that feature out earlier specifically and it was working

I have just pm'd you and e-mailed you, and it allowed me too. A member had also pm'd me earlier today. Did you clear your cache earlier as requested? The web team explained to me that even if you do that there will still be a few glitches in the matrix as the site relearns itself

If the problem persists, let me know after you have surfed the site abit and I'll have the web company check out the functionality tomorrow on your account.

Cheers,

BT

Hi, yep I had cleared my cache. However, have just swapped from work to personal laptop and it allowed me to send a PM, so it perhaps was something on my work laptop firewall.

PM arrived cheers, but not the email - yet!

It would seem the pm feature is working but that the e-mail member function is not.

Hi Brian

Since the site has been uprated I have stopped receiving posts sent to my email address.

I have checked my profile and subscriptions and all seems to be in order!

Any ideas?

Much appreciated, rgd's
