I am new to this forum and have been looking for a manual 2003 4200 Spyder with glass rear screen, 20-30k miles and FSH (preferably with receipts). I regularly scan the obvious sources e.g. Auto trader, EBay and the sites of Indy dealers for approx a year now. Even though I am willing to be flexible on colour combo and miles, I have not seen THE car yet. Were any manual 4200 Spyders registered in 2003? Just don’t want a Cambiocorsa.

Leave the guy alone. If he wants a manual box then fine. So many of these threads turn into a manual vs CC thread and don't answer the question originally posted.

I am not a city highflyer; I have waited a long time to be in a position to realize my ambition to own a Maserati and make a commitment to long term ownership, a key component of which is to understand; can I realistically maintain it as per the time/miles requirement through into my retirement? The car will become as described in the language of this forum a ‘garage queen’ but it will be maintained as per design.
 
Having spent many years implementing maintenance strategies for companies operating within the Oil and Gas industry, the reliability and maintainability of any system directly effects the safe operation (not a prime issue for a 4200 gear shift system), the operations profitability and fixed costs.
 
During my late teens and through my early twenties I drove sports cars with heavy clutches, a near new ‘72 TR6 for example, your left leg just gets used to it and never had to replace a single clutch.
 
Call me old fashioned but, for me the simplified design from the original Cambiocorsa specification will allow me to enjoy my pride and joy for as long as possible.

Hi yewtree and welcome to the forum,

Sorry to say,   your  train of thought is slightly flawed in this case , the manual  box is exactly the same, and an adapted version of the CC box     not the otherway round    therefore  changes are made by means of linkages   which frequently  wear /stretch making it difficult to select 2nd /3rd    thus frequent trips to the dealer to adjust,     my advice   would be to test a few cc boxes   and get your training on test drives      its not rocket science but an applied technique   which is relatively easy to master,

I for one was the same as you , old school  and into manuals , but once bitten   believe me you will be smitten    would never go back now    try it you wont be disappointed

You are right about trying both.

Incidently my indie told me that most people with the manual box do get a lot more miles out of the clutch.

BB...just an innocent question wasn't getting at the guy.......luckily I tried a manual too.....for the first few miles I thought it was a HGV gearbox I was ploughing through!

Secondly, the split is 80% CC Vs 20% manuals so the selection or combinations might be quite limited....regardless of what yewtree4200 gets, as long as its a Maserati....I don't mind in the least!!!

I just get sick of the gearbox debates when what is right for one punter is wrong for another. I don't like CC but I fully understand why most people do.

I also have a TT mark II and the debates on the TT forum wrt to DSG/STronic really wind me up as there is no right answer but all the 30 year old IT Consultants from the Thames Valley that populate that forum can argue about it for days!

Bob,

You may find many of the early 03 cars still have a PVC rear screen as many were run out versions of 02 models using up all the old roofs. Not sure if you can retro fit either.
