This month's EVO magazine publishes an interview with Karl-Heinz Kalbfell, Maserati / Alpha Bossman. Page 27, it is well worth a read.

On the launch of the new Alpha 159 he is talking about relaunching the GTA badge as a lightened version in a less extreme M3 style.

He then goes on to give some  insight into how the marques may develop. He is committed to reducing Maser production costs and doubling sales from 6500 a year.

"We could have decided to sell in much bigger volumes but I think that they should stay at a similar price to the Quattroporte. Alfas will peak at perhaps euros 60K and Maseratis will sit between euros 100 and 110K- although there is room for a car like the MC12, in which case there is no ceiling to what a Maserati can cost"

"The two marques will share components, but none that will form the cars character. A Maserati must be a Maserati, an Alfa must be an Alfa"

To me that invokes more questions. Surely all the big cost savings are by sharing the main components. I.E. Floorpans, engines drivetrains, suspension; all of which are character inducing? There is always the Italian wiring of course!

Any thoughts?

Malcolm, which Evo is this?  Is it the one with the mid engined Audi "Le mans" on the front?
Just from readin gwhat you have said.  I think it actually provides me with some hope, but I agree more questions need to be answered.  A key question has to be, can Maserati justify 100+ euros when they are sharing with Alfa?  With Ferrari yes, but with Alfa?

Just heard yesterday at Silverstone that the coupe will have the new alfa chassis and a GM engine

MASERATI IS DEAD

I always knew Ferrari would mess it up, turns out they used the 4200 as a beta test car for their new enrty level car. Lets make the most of the cars we've got now!

Ok Guys back from the sailing now, have been a bit busy.

I'd say don't panic about the marque! Maserati has "died" many times.

Currently it looks like our cars will be modern classics and the ghiblis and cups are collectors items anyway.

The Alfa pan and GM engine (?Alfa's 3.2 V6?) has been mooted for a long time, sounds a bit like the de Tomasso years!

Setember issue of Evo has another interview with Kalbfell, it seems that is the intention for a cheaper entry level Maser and he is keen to increase sales of the Quattroporte and continue using the Ferrari 4.2 in the top models. He is promising new models and maintaining the existing with niche models like the Gransport. Not letting anything out yet then....assumimg there is something planned to let out!

The Detomaso cars had maserati designed and built engines in them (including Kyalami) even he wouldnt go so low as to put another manafactures block in! Sorry to sound so down about it but I really am peed off with what they have done to the marque.

That's true but de Tomasso used the aging 4.9 lump and the V6 developed by / for Citroen without which the bi turbos would not have happened. Don't get me wrong here, as I think the original Ghibli, Bora and Meraks amongst the best car's created by Maserati. They were Supercars.

There hasn't been a new engine for years and as you know the 4200 is a Ferrari engine and the current cars are complete complete with ferrari gearbox and drive train so that side died in late 2001 with the Spyder.

Maserati don't make bodies or engines but have assembled beautiful cars for a while now.

The marque might go either way now. It is not economical for them to use a lot of ferrari components it costs a fortune to develop an "own" engine. TVR did it but who wants a TVR? Maserati apparently doesn't make money and they need to share components and deliver 10,000 cars a year. May the cheap model support the real cars! The real death will come with small and large engined cars sharing the same bodies!!!!!

The next few years look grim but the owner's clubs have to keep lobbying.

Somebody please switch the torch back on at the end of the tunnel.
