I am planning on buying a house in France, autumn or maybe next winter. The thing is, I don't know where. Brochures are all very well, but I want to go and explore the country and I need a car to do it in. Would you;

a) Take the 4200GT. It's already on 58k and I am looking at putting on 6-8k miles in a few months. What does this do to its value? I just paid 23.5k for it, how much of a hammering would that get with a lot more miles on it? It's fast, modern, supremely comfortable and (relatively) reliable.

b) Get a fun beater. I am looking at an 80s Corvette! Targa roof for southern sunshine, auto box for autoroutes, 8k to buy and probably sell it again for 7 after the trip. LHD as well, and I would care a lot less leaving it in the street at night than the 4200.

Fuel is probably going to cost the same, within a few mpg anyway.

What would you do??

Seriously?

Wouldn't even look at the 'vette!

Maser will give you far more credibility all round.

Oh and some of the French roads are just fantastic drive.

Depreciation....you didn't by an investment and the less it is worth the more fun you have had! Maybe that is an investment?

Where are you staying? Many hotels can offer fairly secure parking if contacted ahead.

Finally.....GT.....it's what it is for!

take the 4200 every day of the week

Totally agree with Malc, the pic looks like a contender for shed of the week to me

Keep the 4200 for the UK and get a Ghibli for France

Not sure a Ghibli would get me to Dover...

The main appeal is the roof off - not looking for credibility really, just exploring French countryside. It would be the ultimate GT drive though, and I must admit all day with the roof off does get tiring (in the Marcos), which is what I want to avoid.

Looks like no votes for our colonial cousin then  Not sure I expected anything different on a Maserati forum! Who knows, I may swap the coupe for a Spyder in a sudden fit of pique...

Malc, how are they with the roof up?

Hey Lewis,

I love my Spyder but they ain't quiet!

Warm & Dry, no leaks but the wind noise at "healthy motorway" speeds is, as with other soft tops, "around you" but ok!

I would suggest that if you are looking for one make sure it has the wind deflector that fits to and between the head rests. It is ridiculously expensive to purchase and is an optional extra, it is highly recomended for distance work. In the Summer we travel everywhere with the hood down when dry. Sunny days in the winter too.......when we get one!

At 6'3" I slide down the seat a bit for comfort from the wind, but hey

Also at "european" speeds with the hood down they drink the fuel........but so what

  Do it!

If the cash is sloshing about I'd certainly consider the Vette, it has merit for the trip intended and I always reckon more cars are more useful than fewer cars!  Easy to get fixed in the unlikely event it does break too, it only has about three moving parts

Targas also not too bad compared to proper drop-tops for buffeting etc, but watch for the vortex effect which can suck stuff out of the top at decent speeds!

surely if you are pitching up in a mas.. they'll add a few Euro's to the price... get a ropey old dog & just keep the mas handy for when you've signed the dear ;)

Vette is for sale in the UK, it's a cheap fun car that won't mind another few thousand miles on it. Do that in the Mas and I am halfway to an expensive service... So the Vette has a lot of merits.

Similar money sees me in SLKs, Boxters, S2000s etc as well, and I can get them cheaper as I want a left-hooker...

I am with paco on this, I like to by cars that have bottomed out in price and all of the above for 10k will have. I would always rather have an extra one sat around. The Merc, although the worst driver of the bunch with the worst image, really appeals with the foldaway roof... I am looking for autoroute mile eating comfort.

I know, the Mas is still the best for it

The Mas is best for the trip down to your new pad once you have it (I look forward to the annual "board meeting" ) but the Vette will be a great shlepping tool, exploring all the lanes with only two pedals to worry about, not worrying about hedges scratching the paint as you discover that hidden gem...

Hmm, I'm just a little envious here!!  We looked seriously at moving to the Charente/Lot/Limousin/anywhere around there a few years ago, glad we didn't as I would be Maser-less among other reasons, but it beckons strongly!!

Oooh I do worry about you boys sometimes!

Steve is right the 'vette is for watching your veg grow!

Dazzne is spot on.....left hook Ghibli bought over here for say £6-8K, how "bottomed out" do you want it?........Dover indeed!.......we took our rt hander on a 2500 plus mile excursion to Modena a couple of years ago....didn't even use oil!  grandtouring at its best!

Then of course you could by a Quattroporte IV for around £9K.......

'vette and fun in the same sentence? isn't that an oxymoron?

On the other hand be "captain sensible" and take the Audi!

Understanding the logic on saving the Mas, I'd be very tempted by this:

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/advert+search/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146,N-58/advert.action?R=200724288735485&distance=192&postcode=SP9+7US&channel=CARS&make=&model=&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=

http://www.specialistcars.net/newspecialistcars/carpages/76.htm

Mileage not stated, but it ticks all the boxes including auto, sunroof, and aircon. Assuming the car checks out ok, the smell of cash should bring it within budget.

no no no no no, that 928 looks aweful in white.  I actually quite like the 928 in general, but that is a no no.  LHD Ghibli would be perfect, but I wouldn't fancy trying to sell it after I'd finished with it....that is if you could bring yourself to part with it!
As for the Vette, no way, huge barge that can't do corners....look elsewhere.
S2000 would be ok, but no torque would be frustrating, Boxster is too slow......how about an elise....maybe no good for the motorway.  I've got it.....M coupe or M Roadster.  That is a lot of quick car for the money!

LOL. Ordinarily I'd agree with you about white, but in all other respects it fits the bill nicely. Lewis could add wedding ribbons and charge £300 a kick on Saturdays, but perhaps it would be more in keeping to stick on a set of Martini stripes (just right for the Le Mans Classic).

Anorak on:

                    Corvette :                  Maserati 3200 :

Car overall length: 4540 mm                        4510 mm

Car overall width:  1860 mm                        1822 mm

Hardly excessive

And corners? This is France! Unless he's heading to the mountains it's a pretty US-style driving experience, I reckon it would do ok!!

I like the 928 too, white is the new black or so I'm told.  Which is why I went for blue on the 500!!

Just got soaked standing on a building site, which prompts the question.......

Would a targa roof on an '80s 'vette hold out the rain? did it ever?

Go to france and not get on those proper driving experiences....that would be sacrilege!

Oh come on guys if a 'vette is being considered then a white 928 is a must have!

Hey Paco do they have driving experiences in the US? some sort of theme park where the 56mph conveyor belt doesn't apply?

Malc, I have had a few road trips in the US in "driveaway" cars (including Miami to Boston in 26 hrs, definitely over 55 mph!), and as a student I used my tips from waiting tables to buy a 67 Cadillac 2 door, and drove it from Long Island to Arizona, before selling it in Boulder Colorado.

There's plenty of space for fun, especially away from the East Coast, but you do need to be a little vigilant.  The Caddy was hardly a go kart but it would peg at 75-80 all day long.  As I was reminded when I arrived at a midwest one-horse township after many miles of straight line - I saw the road was diverted up a side street while the main street was being resurfaced, so  I braked to what felt like a sensible speed to take the 90 deg turn, but of course I was attuned to 75 mph, and had only slowed to about 45, cue 16.5 ft x 7ft of finest detroit iron peeling it's crossplies in the most lurid lift-off slide you've ever seen, much to the amusement of the roadworkers...

With cars that handled like that thing 55 mph seems eminently sensible
