All,

Following on from the offers of loaner wheels while I get them done....

I'm hoping to get my wheels sorted in advance of Stanford Hall and have read up on several options available.

Ideally, I'd like to take them somewhere that will strip them back completely, make any slight repairs (if needed) and where I can specify the colour.  From reading on here and MF, there seems to be a number of options but I am keen to hear from and, in my dreamy little world, see pics of pre and post refurb wheels and also get an idea of how they are baring up over time.  I hope to keep the GS for a while and really only want to do this once, if possible.

From my readings, the places currently being considered are:

Dem's mate (will PM you Dem, if this is the chosen route)
Pristine Wheels in MK (used them before, but for Diamond Cut)
Lepson's in Kent
GrayPaul, Notts
Some fella that apparently does HRO's, but he's mobile (surely, they wouldnt be stripped correctly?)

I'd really appreicate seeing a bit of a dump of information but, more specifically, some before and after shots and some intel on how they're lasting.

All help appreciated and I'll be sure to post up my before/after shots when I finally get them done.

Cheers

Woody

Hi Woody,
I suppose there are two options, get them painted or powder coated. I had always thought that powder coating was going to be the best option but following a long conversation with a guy who worked for a wheel refurb specialist I would now be wary! The problems with powder coating are that the wheel is bathed in acid as part of the preparation work and then baked in an oven after the coating has been applied. The correct acid mix is essential and the correct oven temp( different makes of wheels require different temp/time) has to be observed. I suppose it boils down to you get what you pay for, but I wonder if some of the cheaper places will be dilligent enough?
I know it's a hassle but if somewhere has been recommended by someone who's opinion you regard, then I would go with that. It's not easy being pedantic and "anal" about our cars but it's good to know that we are not alone.
Look forward to seeing some pics,
Ronnie

Thanks Ronnie.

That's a level of detail I'd not considered before!  With that in mind, going for a full refurb, Lepson's would have to be front runners.

I certainly will keep this thread updated, its a question that comes up a lot.

Cheers
Woody

Woody

I used a place called 'myalloys' in Basingstoke after being recommended tham as being on a par with Lepsons but quite a bit cheaper. There is some info on their home page about types of finish, see the link below:

http://www.myalloys.co.uk/

They did the wheels on my Tuscan and did a fantastic job.

Here are some pics of before and after (I changed the colour of the car and had the wheels refurbished and powder coated)

Thanks Tony.

The TVR is a great looking thing!  Changing the colour was very brave, but its looks great!  (mind, it didnt exactly look bad before! :))

I'll have a look at their site, thanks.

It's always a tricky judgement call when comparing prices, just because a company charges less for a service doesn't necessarily mean that they will do a lesser job. But we have all been bitten before on various things so you tend to be wary.
All the best,
Ronnie

Woody, I've used BJV for many wheels including Ferrari diamond cuts, always impressed with their work and prices http://www.wheelrefurbishing.co.uk/contact.htm

Thanks Mark.

I've booked in now, they're going in in the morning.  I've got my fingers crossed that it goes well as they're not cheap, but I'm hoping the end result is good.  I'll post up pics soon.

Woody
