A US friend sent me a link and the story below. I clicked on the link and got this message.

This video is not available in your country.

So now I'm really intrigued and have a desperate urge to jump on a plane.

Anyway the story is:

On an August morning in 1978, French filmmaker Claude Lelouch mounted a gyro-stabilized camera to the bumper of a Ferrari 275 GTB and had a friend, a professional Formula 1 racer, drive at breakneck speed through the heart of Paris early in the morning. The film was limited for technical reasons to 10 minutes; the course was from Porte Dauphine, through the Louvre, to the Basilica of Sacre Coeur.

No streets were closed, for Lelouch was unable to obtain a permit.

The driver completed the course in about 9 minutes, reaching nearly 140 MPH in some stretches. The footage reveals him running real red lights, nearly hitting real pedestrians, and driving the wrong way up real one-way streets.

Upon showing the film in public for the first time, Lelouch was arrested. He has never revealed the identity of the driver, and the film went underground. If you haven't seen this before, it is a classic!

Kieth,

Thats the story...but in fact the car used was a old Renault as used by most film makers due to the engine being in the boot and you could then fix a camera and tripod in the front boot. The sound track was then dubbed to sound like a sports car.

It was featured on 5 th gear about 2 years ago with Vicky doing the same run in the new Clio trying to match the time...but she has 20c traffic, lights, conjestion etc and was not as quick.

Still fact is never as much fun as Urban Legends.

Klive,

The 'film' you were unable to see is called 'Rendevouz', which is available to buy. The story in short is of a young cad racing through the streets of Paris to meet a girl. Basically, it is long scene of a driven car with a camera strapped to the front, moving at brake neck speeds. Rumoured to be a Ferrari 275 at the time, but later rumoured to be a Mercedes as the engine sounds, speed, and tyre screetching were proven not to match a Ferrari doing what the car in the film was doing.

But yes, the driving was real, the film maker had no permits, and the footage is real and awesome! Now, save your airfare because, if you visit www.Route324.com one of our sponsors (honestly, this is not a shameless plug!)you will see a section of footage from the film on the front page.

Urban Myths eh? Don't you just love em!

Cheers,

Birdcage

Have it on DVD. It's neat but not sure worth the price.

Urban myth or not it's still a great piece of footage. I searched car boot sales for years trying to find it, then eBay came to the rescue. As for the price Big Foot, I think I paid around a tenner for 9 minutes of iconic joy, not bad in my book. The whole thing used to be on Youtube, but only clips appear to remain.

Here's the link for any of our members overseas.

My point is, why ban it in the UK? Is it another form of censorship, are "they" expecting someone to try and beat the time or is it to encourage more sales of the DVD?

I travel enough, so I'm sure I'll find myself somewhere I can watch it someday.

Thanks for that Michael, I can now comment on it back to my American friend.

Actually it's not a very impressive video. I've made a similar trip myself across Paris driving a minibus with a bunch of my US colleagues in the back during the rush hour in less than 9 minutes. No girl running to great me at the end though just all the Americans running away ''
(To all French Policemen that are reading this, that comment is a joke, I always drive extremely carefully and within the law in your country)

Just run a prog called Hide IP NG and you can get round all the restrictions.

Nothing to do with the ISP, I use a program called 'Hide IP'

You can buy it here: http://www.spiritlevelfilm.com/shop/product.php?productid=16138&cat=248&page=1

They are the official distributors. I originally had this on VHS years ago prior to its realease, pays to have journalist friends sometimes

It's rumoured to be a Renault doing 50mph, a Mercedes auto doing 140mph, fact is no-one knows. But the sounds is a Ferrari V12 with 5 speeds.

I have watched it many, many, many times and never tire of it. There are some damp roads with cobbles in places where you can see the car lose grip and the wheels spin, the picture wobble and the sound correspond to a car bouncing off the limiter. Also the driver misses a gear change on the soundtrack once and the car on the film lurches. It's too coincidental in my opinion not to be the soundtrack for the actual drive and there are always people who'd like it not to be true.

The tyre noises are added on though, I will give that ground
