I have had a report from a dealer that a gs i am considering has a clutch report of 49%.

Its an 07.

Hi gs07,

What is the mileage?

When I was looking, before purchasing mine a couple of months ago, I viewed loads, all with different wears vs mileages.  The general pattern was a actual/expected clutch change around 16K-20K miles.  Every offical dealer quoted me circa £2,000 for a clutch change (where I understand only about £300-400 for the parts).

Cheers
Chris

6374 miles.

One owner - he must have been flogging it.

It worries me.

But just had a service.

Not necessarily Gs07 i think most wear is down to driving styles rath than caning, as i was really surprised  very kindly  today at Goodwood when Myles from emblem very kindly  stuck the old sd3 on the car to clear a cel light due to a lambda sensor playing up  , checked the clutch whilst he was at it only 34% worn , ive done 13000 miles in 14 months  and the previous owner bought the car with new clutch fitted at 15000, the car has now done 30300 miles so adapted driving styles make a helluva difference in my mind, not long though after the good news  and a few more spanking laps ,rested  for a while went to go back out and  my F1 pump packed up   so you win some you lose some ,   yes and dealer quotes are often around the 2k mark for clutches  but most indies are around the 1000 to 1200 mARK I think you'll find  and now kevlar clutches are available which gaurantee 4 to five x the longevity

regards loz

Loz,

Should I be worried?

My yes , and make it part of the sale that you would like a new clutch fitted as part of the deal , you would rarely use the last 15% in fear that it would go anytime  and cause breakdown, so in theory you only have 36% of usable  clutch  to air on the side of caution    good bargaining criteria

Clutches would not be covered under warranty unless you could prove that it went due to something else ( grey area ) i would air on the side of caution and request that it was done as part of the deal

exactly what I was going to do - get it as part of the deal.

we'll see what the reaction is.

When would you expect that clutch would need to be replaced if it was left as it is?

Rules of thumb considered to extend clutch life are ; never use auto mode , try not to reverse uphill to often, try and always change down  rather than letting the revs do it automatically when slowing down , be positive when pulling away in first , one tends to want to ease away slowly  that exassabates clutch wear at biting point,

Most cc drivers do most of the above,           as an added aid i tend to  flick both paddles  so the car goes into neutral when approaching  traffic lights or juctions when i know that i have to stop and just coast to a stop ( less changes        if for some reason the lights change on approach all you have to do flick the up  paddle and the correct gear for the speed is automatically selected ,

Doesn't take too long to adapt to the above     it soon becomes 2nd nature  so along these line i would suggest that you should get somewhere between 5 and 8k for the remainder 35%

Hope this helps regards lozcb

GS, My Gs is at Graypaul for a small service at present and to sort out the slight judder on 1st gear. Have been told this morning that the judder is due to the spiget bearing in the clutch assembly, The warranty I have with warrantywise will cover the cost of £1,300.00. My clutch wear is 48% so Graypaul advised a new clutch £350.00 + VAT so having this done at the same time no point waiting. To replace it would cost £2k? later on. The clutch was replaced 16,000 miles ago when I bought the car, so I would estimate the live of a new clutch to be about 20,000 miles which is what I was told when I bought the car?

Good luck mate!!!!!!

Had all sorts of agro with warranty guys, basically, they will not pay for wear, only broken parts.

Get the mechanic to remove the clutch, take the spigot bearing out and smash it with a hammer and then chuck the bits back in the end of the crank, then call them to come and inspect.

Make sure the court approved inspector rights the words BROKEN on the report before he leave, my inspector forgot and I had to pay him to come out again to right the word broken, then go away again.

yeah mine had the bearing done aobut 3k miles ago & new clutch at the same time (well, it was only 50% worn but mad not too for the sake of a few hundred quid). Make sure it's been done.

you can either give the chassis number & number plate etc to a local dealer or probably easier is to contact kevin croaker from Maserati UK warranty (details are on this site somewhere) and ask for details of all the warranty work. Oh & it shouldn't have a very slight shudder pulling away in first :D

well fellas ... looking at a real possibility tomorrow.

gs 07 - limited edition - fully optioned - got the lot - everything - as well as sat nav - 6374 miles.

One owner - two services - last one 3 days ago - full history - both services same dealer - from whom the owner bought it.

4 new tires 3 days ago - pirellis.

spoken about the clutch - dealer not ruling out replacing it (although he tried to tell me 49% not a concern) - I am not prepared to buy it unless its replaced.

list price is 41500.

now assuming we got a new clutch in the deal - what does everyone think?

What do we think would be a good v great v fair deal?

Assuming the dealer took the car in part ex , i would guesstimate that he allowed 36/37 on the car  plus he would have made on the car he sold

Depends how cheeky and how much bottle you have got , i would plumb for £38k to include new clutch and release bearing with print out to prove its been done
And for them to include an extended 1 year warranty to run consecutive to the existing warranty,    these economic climes definately put you in the driving seat so use it whilst you can , there wont be many buyers about xmas looming and all that  with that sort of  cash to spend   keep us posted

regards lozcb
