i have a non abs ghibli fitted with the ranger diff, my car recently broke 2 teeth of the pinion gear and needs a replacement, this is the second ranger diff that has broken, im looking at replacing it with the later model ferrari diff.does anybody have any experience with this coversion, and can it be done without swapping the rear subframe, can the existing subframe be modified to accomodate the new diff?

Hi
I also had a broken pinion in the past, and also i thought about a replacement with the GT diff.
Subframe, driveshaft, antirollbar, no easy job.

hey Daniel-

did you actually do the conversion, or just investigate it...?

what happened...?

indeed it is not, and nor is it a cheap excersie. however i you could modify the existing setup it would make it easier, as the diff doesnt mount to rear subframe on the ranger models, it is an independant mount, therefore fabrication is possible, the tailshaft and driveshafts would be the main two issues to sort after mounting,

hmm...

sounds like a major engineering exercise...

The GT/Cup diff mounts from three positions, where as the Ranger mounts upwards to the chassis itself. It would have to be some fabrication to catch all the mounts and mate with the chassis...

Not impossible though.

Might be cheaper to try for a subframe- I know Eurospares used to show them for a few hundred ££

Hi Jim

I didn't made the conversion, too much parts you need.
Also i had not enough time to do this.
Diff itself, subframe, antirollbar, driveshaft, perhaps axle drive shafts, ......

I have some Ranger diffs in stock, so another broken pinion in the future is no problem for me.

my ranger diff also currently has a broken pinion but for me its more i would prefer the upgrade asa this is the second ranger diff pinion gone, and no track days, or hard driving

you know?

It might be worth starting with Eurospares to see what they've got left from later Ghiblis...

I'm surprised you've had those problems.  Our Ranger has done more than 50k and the last 10k and 4 years have been track driving almost exclusively.
Does the diff oil get changed on schedule?  Is it the Ranger with the oil cooler on the back?

It has an oil cooler in the piccie....................Are the cooling fins open as they are in a prone position and easily damaged which does mean the oil runs hot

my diff has a steel tray a few inches under it to protect it, the last diff was changed only 2-3 thousand kilometers ago so the oil was brand new.

Is the steel tray a standard part?  I don't remember ever seeing one.  Maybe it is restricting air flow and so it's overheating?

not sure if it is or not, but i dont believe it would be restricting air flow as it sits lower than the cooler and the front is open to trap air, i suppose its possible but i see it as unlikely, as i said it was not very restrictive, and protected the diff cooler from any road or stone hazards. i would take a photo but the diff and tray are both off the car

Any chance of a picture Granca to help clear this up?
