Have had a few issues with the error/oil light  coming on   and the oil pressure dropping when idling in traffic or pulling away from lights at low speed. Once the car (3200 Assetto corsa) is moving the light goes off . The car drives fine ,sounds fine and the oil pressure comes back up to 5 once driving at a decent speed. When it came on initially  today I was en-route to  buy some Selnia oil(-ouch sorry to start that one up again  ) from the local Alfa dealership and had to drive it through stop start traffic for a couple of miles . I topped the car up as the oil was at minimum   but the light has persisted in coming on in the manner described above . Should I be worried  ? Any thoughts gratefully received

You could have your endfloat checked to confirm if it's within tolerance, although it would be good if you have a previous result to compare with to see if it has deteriorated, the oil senders are notoriously unreliable and usually this is the culprit have a go at disconnecting and reconnecting the connection terminal in case there's a bad contact, best of luck.

It could be only the oil pressure sensor (mine started doing something similar and it is scary - but it was only the sensor), but best have it checked ASAP because if it is not the sensor, could be a larger problem, and could become a very large problem :)

I'm not sure on the 3200, but is the oil pressure warning light, and the oil pressure gauge, both fed from the same sensor, or separate sensors? Hopefully the same sensor that is hopefully duff. If separate sensors, does not sound like good news I am afraid. Cheers Mike

According to the workshop manual, the light on the oil indicator is driven as a function of the engine rpm and the measured oil pressure, and there are several pressure thresholds that triggers the light for corresponding rpm intervals (I don't have the manual at hand and do not remember the exact values). The "oil error" text is also simultaneously illuminated, flashing, in the dashboard. The manual indicates that this is done this way since the indicator light alone could pass ignored by the driver due  to its position.

Oil pressure switches are a known problem and hopefully that's all it will be, mine went at £42 K miles.

You do need to get it checked out however as if its not this then it could be something more serious like the crankshaft trust washers . If this is the case then it they should be attended to immediatley before the crankshaft wears beyond a tollerance that allows replacement of the thrust washers.

thanksfor the advice everyone, will take it into Shiltech tomorrow and get their advice Will let you know what they say. Sounding a bit ominous though. Am I wrong to draw some comfort from the fact that it drives normally despite the lights?

Hi- draw some comfort from the fact that the switches are a known problem, and if you car is an auto thrust washer problems are very rare.

just thought I'd update you all, turned out to be a faulty  oil sensor , has been replaced by  Shiltech and no problems  subsequently . Thanks again for all the advice and reassurance !
