Westbrom, if you've done the pads / discs on a Bmw 330d I doubt you'll find a lot of difference just an emotive marque! You will often find a lip at the edge of discs because the pad is not as wide as the disc surface, assuming it is not interefering with the pad / brake performance or is very pronounced (this would probably mean the disc is already at minimum thickness) I wouldn't rush to skim it off.

What say you V Bird?

It all depends on the lip... just how pronounced it really is.

I have before now removed a lip with a 4" angle grinder [I am not suggesting you do this by the way, you need a little more than a steady hand and hutzpah] i have also chipped one off with a hammer [again, a dalliance with error not worth the overture unless you are spot-on bingo-bango with a lump of iron]

Leave it be unless you want to file it down which is not that hard and far less prone to disaster than the other two ways.

It is indicative of untempered discs though...

My suggestion for what it's worth...

Replace pads until you are forced to buy new discs, buy the discs and cure them overnight in an oven [see thread around here for exactly how to do that]

Buy some decent pads from then on. [EBC red are good]

Hi V bird

how do you rate jurid pads?

There is about £20 difference between EBC red and green, red front/rear set costing £140 do you know if the red has a longer life or do they wear quicker due to the higher friction

Red EBC are for cars that 'weigh a bit more' and 'go a bit faster'...:D

Jurid I know only a little about so can't comment...

I would like to find some nice 'Endless' pads if they made them for our cars but alas they don't.

Endless [Japanese] are the best pads I have ever found, their discs and calipers are right up there as well... but none of their stuff fits the 3200GT sadly... failing that Hawk would be great, but again no luck.

You can get Ferodo pads [which are very good indeed] the following link confirms that our cars run on brakes that are similar to those listed in the link...

Steve,

I fitted Jurid pads to The M3 I had a while back and they really didn't last at all!  The "bite" wasn't there either never felt convinced the car would slow let alone stop and that car had fantastic braking capabilty with decent pads. Handling went right out the window! Very disappointed in them and at the time they just disappeared the wear rate was err quick! They may be better now but I have been put off by that experience.

V Bird,

Thanks for the advice, I cant see any advantage in getting the disc skimmed the lip only appears where the pad doesnt touch the disc so skimming the discs isnt going to prolong the disc life is it? why do the service agents recomend this anyway surely just another way of making money, new discs are only £135 each from Eurospares which doesnt seem too bad in the scheme of things (2 tanks of V power petrol). Ive bought some red stuff pads for £57 and will fit them myself.

Just picked up my new car from Emblem!

Well ok, it is the same one but they fixed the rattles from the nearside window, worn guide, and sorted the handbrake and one or two other things showed the piccies of the bits had all the time in the world to chat through the work and other maser stuff.

Sensible costs.

Car feels great just as it should again.

Many thanks Martin, Myles & Darren

You have to hand it to them, the customer experience is second to none.

The "evidence" pics to accompany the bills is an excellent touch, and will be useful at resale, also the guided tour through the shrapnel - I might not have known one end of Gudgeon pin from the other but it was all well explained and very obvious the bits were past their best.  Too many garages just bin it all.

Just beefing myself up for tomorrow's experience, but hey at least it will be valeted again!!!

Hey Paco, You'll be grinning again within minutes of putting your card back in your wallet

Nothing like a Maser to overcome the trauma of a haemoraging wallet. Even though it was the cause in the first place!
