You have a pre abs ghibli.
Your window for parts is any pre 94 non abs ghibli. The rear arms, drive shafts, hubs, wheels (PCD, offset etc), ARBs etc are all different I'm afraid.
The good thing is you have a later engine (as EVO says - possible replacement), so you have the updated ignition and dump valves (which help with the life of the turbos).

Perhaps it's had an engine replacement at some stage? The interior is clearly that of a pre-abs Ghibli.

How can you tell that ? They all look the same to me !

Update:

I located a '93 subframe, not from a Ghibli but the asking price (£££), along with chad5k1's comment made me think again about using what I already have. The '87 arm has the same outer bearing but a smaller inner bearing; the hub shaft is larger in diameter and has smaller splines than the Ghibli. The overall length (bearing to bearing) of each shaft is the same.

As a trial fit, I had the cup of the Ghibli inner bearing cup diameter reduced in size by 1mm, so that the Ghibli inner bearing would fit into the '87 arm, then I reassembled the Ghibli hub shaft into the '87 arm and it all fits snugly.

As a permanent fix, I will have the '87 arm inner bearing recess bored out by 1mm and buy a new Ghilbli inner bearing (available for about £35 from a local Bearing factors) and the job will be done.

All I need now is a damper  - any offers?

Del

A few small details for the keen observer, first the interior:

- New oval badge on the steering wheel.

- New look facia for the instruments.

- "Ghibli" now written on the wood panel on the dash instead of "Maserati"

- Softer carpets

- Softer grade leather

The exterior:

- New bonnet vents

- Colour coded bumpers without the dark grey border stripe.

- No more tridents on fuel filler caps.

- No more "Ghibli" badge on boot lid

- New trident emblems in grille and on boot lid.

- New power folding side mirrors

- New Mille Miglia alloys.

- Dark effect front headlights.

Easy!

Update:

The rear arm is now in place and the Ghibli is back on 4 wheels again.  All I need to do now is to attach the damper, anti-roll bar bracket and fit the handbrake mechanism to complete the task. I'll be putting that on hold because I must now attend to the small matter of getting the car to start.

Ok, she's running now. Just a case of working out the immobilier and ditching the alarm howler.

I still need a driver's (rh) door glass and mirror. Any offers?

<<Check ebay a guy had a pair of electric mirrors for sale last week. They looked to be Rosso Orient but Im sure that will not be a problem.>>

Thanks, Pibbow. I already spotted those, but I only really need a cover and glass, which I may be able to source from  Maserati.

I left the car idling in my workshop and, when the fans cut in, the engine stalled. I restarted it, let it idle for a bit and next time the fans came on it was ok. I held the revs at about 3000 and she cut out. This occured regularly, until finally she wouldn't restart. Looking around the car, the fuel pump cut off switch in the boot was loose on its mountings. Someone had been there before. I checked the spark plugs (quite new) and then the fuel lines. There was no fuel being delivered but plenty in the tank. I started checking fuses and relays. The fuel pump fuse (30A) had a hair-line crack across it! Hardly noticeable and it showed continuity. when cold. Replacing the fuse cured the fault, but I wonder just how long the previous owner had suffered with this intermittant cutting out.

Ok, so I've bitten the bullet and bought the pair of racing mirrors which were advertised on eBay, so now I just need a driver's door glass. The mirrors were the best deal which I could find. I am having the panelwork done next week and the paint put on afterwards. Then I'll have to take off the rear trailing arm again to weld on the anti roll bar bracket and fit the new hub bearings. After that, the MoT

By the way, I did notice when looking under the car that it has a pair of sports cats fitted.

I've knocked out the dents and the Ghibli is now ready for paint. It's booked in for the week after next along with an MoT.

I've disconnected the immobilier, so now I don't have that moment of angst when I insert the special device into the dash. It now starts first time, every time. What a mess the wiring was, considering that the alarm/immobiliser installation was a professional job.

The exhaust was knocking on the propshaft the first time I drove it, so I thought that it would need a quick adjustment. When I looked closely, I could see that the exhaust wasn't hung properly at all. The two sports cats were mounted on a metal cross-piece which was supported by an arrangement of bolts and tap washers! So I spent the best part of an afternoon redesiging and fabricating a secure but flexible mounting.

The rear diff is a bit stiff on the driver's side. I don't know whether that's diff lock-up which will ease once the car is driven, or a fault in the diff (seized shaft bearing or whatever). I'll find out for sure once I've driven it to and from the MoT test centre. I'll be on the lookout for a rear diff, so please contact me if you can help.

The wipers don't work, so I'll be attending to that next.

Well, I drove the Ghibli all of 5 miles to the MoT centre, where the paint shop is too - and all is not well...

There was axle tramp and a groaning noise on moderate acceleration. I put my foot flat to the floor only once and all that happened was that the rear wheels spun! The wipers don't work at all and there was steering wobble and knock throughout the whole journey. At any speed above 35mph, the whole car seemed unstable. I had the 2 offside wheels checked for trueness and balance, but they were so far out of true they're only good for scrap.

So I cancelled the MoT and left the car with the paint shop. Hopefully things will look more rosy once the car is all the same colour all over.

My list of parts required is getting longer rather than shorter. Is that normal?

List of parts required
1 front and 1 rear wheel to match the other 2
Rear diff
OSR rear trailing arm c/w hub
Driver's door glass
Wiper motor

Any advice or pointers would be appreciated.

Duncan  there is a guy in belgium who will have all you need , details Peter(safane) posted on the  parts forsale thread , seems like he wants to clear his whole yard   retirement etc   so should be some cheap pickings  to compensate for the journey      great to see its nearly getting there

I've just collected the Ghibli from the painters and I'm pleased with the result. The next task is to put it all back together and make the repairs necessary to get it roadworthy before re-booking the MoT.

Thanks for the pointer, Loz, if I can't source the parts elsewhere, I may just hire a car transporter and see if I can't clear the whole lot from Belgium.

I think that a 222 has all of the parts which I'll need, perhaps one will come up on eBay soon. (There are a couple of 430s, but the doors and rear arms are the wrong size.

The search continues....

i would just like to say i have the same as you, mine however is blu sera, dark blue, the first think with your particular model it is an in between car the series 1 ghibli had a distributor not coil packs, the snout on the throttle body comes out on an angle not straight, the wheels are merak style wheels, not the ones you have, your car benefited from some of the ghibli abs parts but not the abs. another point Evoluzione forgot to mention, the suspension and rear diff is different, you have a ranger 3.31 ratio diff the ghibli gt has a ferrari diff with a different ratio, the ghibli gt also has a whole different rear end (underneath) than your car.

converting your car to look like a gt also presents a few issues, i have done this. the new front badge in the chrome oval will not fit in your plastic front grill as the cut out is different, you will need to modify this, the black look headlights are rare and expensive to buy the gt bonnet vents will go straight in, on the rear i had my boot all debaged and repainted, your wheels are 5 X106pcd, the ghibli gt wheels are 5 X 108pcd. you can offset this by the use of wobbly bolts, these can offset up to 2mm. if you get these you can put ghibli gt wheels on your car

Thanks for you comments granca69.

At the moment. I just want to get the Ghibli road legal and safe to drive on the the road. I have no plans to make it look like a Ghibli GT, or any other Maserati for that matter.

When I was driving the car away from the paint shop, a driver in the car behind kept on flashing me. I pulled over in a safe place, to be told that my rear offside wheel was wobbling and smoking! (Yes, the wheel is that badly warped). The paint shop had swapped the front and rear wheel over, and I guess that the stiffness of the rear hub was causing the tyre to slide sideways on the road, creating friction, although the tyre did not feel hot. I wasn't far from my destination, so I kept my speed down and the tyres cool by driving through as many puddles and damp patches as I could.

I will need some good wheels and a wiper motor before I can present the car for an MoT (No need for driver's window glass, apparently). After that, the car needs to pass a VIC test before I can get the V5C registration certificate.

I am still on the lookout for parts

Duncan, have you tried David Askew?
He can usually get most parts.
