Guys Im overly / unjustifiably concerned over the clutch, its not worn now but I would like to cause it the least stress possible. In places on here the odd driving tip crops up BUT for the benefit of the new convert can someone post up in short form the good drivers guide to the cambiocorse gearbox. The most interesting thing I read was that it will shake if it changes down approaching a roundabout meaning you got the downshift wrong but it does no harm !!!
See how misled I am, if anyone can do a few do`s and donts it would be appreciated.

Fear not, the box is very strong and clutches can last an age, I have done 65,000 on just two and still have just 60% showing on the second.

The CC box is self protecting and will not permit up or down shifts if the motor is turning to fast for the requested gear. It will also refuse to change up to a higher gear if the motor is unable to support the requested gear without almost staling.

Summary;
In auto mode the box will change up-down as required. Expect it to be quite clunky in 1-3 both up and down. Be aware that this setting slips the clutch more and will consequently wear faster. It will also never glide like a full auto as there is no torque converter as per a full auto. You can still override changes by using the paddles if you wish as you will note that down shifts are lazy.

Normal Manual. Here the box will permit  you to change up-down as you feel fit, however it will still change down if the motor speed is too low and will change up if too high, this is to protect the motor and box from any damage, as well as your bank balance. Clutch wear is less in this mode due to less slip however you may feel a slight transmission thump unless just as you flick the paddle you ease off the gas just a little. It takes a while to get use to this but after an hour or so it's second nature.

Spots setting. Here the transmission changes are swifter both up and down. You will get the same transmission thump but less so. It will allow the motor to spin to the rev-limiter, but again it will change down if the motor is turning too slow.

Not much i can add to what Safrane has said.

I would say avoid reversing uphill if possible and also not to crawl in traffic.  Both these things will not jepordise the box it self but will just make the clutch wear out quicker.

Great summary Peter.  Definitely worth emphasising as you say that in Normal, the car changes up by itself with a thump as you accelerate past 7100 or so but in Sport it will go on to the 7600 red line and then the limiter will kick in.

When the car changes down by itself (either mode) it does so at pretty low RPM, maybe about 1200, so if you're approaching a roundabout and may want to take off again, it's best to be a step ahead of the box and change down before the car would.  A dab of throtle will make these changes smoother too.  Avoids the possibility the car changes just as you decide to pull out!

Clutches are consumable and don't cost a bomb to replace considering the spec of the car.  They can and do last for tens of thousands of miles in many cases.  Beware though that they can die early if the withdrawal mechanism fails.  I had a clutch which was wearing very slowly and looked set for a very long life until that happened.  Having now replaced it I don't worry about clutches any more and just enjoy the driving.

It's worth remembering the following to prevent excessive wear though:

As Noor says, avoid reversing up hills or slowly for long distances; reverse is geared very high (58mph max!) and so the clutch will be slipping for typical reversing manoeuvres.

As has been mentioned here often, in stop start traffic, let a little gap open up and then drive on in 1st when you can get above 1000 RPM - the biting point when the engine's warm.  Strangely in the Maser, people don't seem to jump in front of you where they might for other cars!

If you know you're going to be in traffic or slow hills from the start of the journey, let the car warm up longer before heading off.  With the choke in operation and a cold engine, clutch biting point is raised (1300 RPM or so) to prevent stalling.

Biting points for higher gears are higher, about 1300 for 2nd gear I think, so expect the clutch to slip if you don't change down when in 2nd at around that speed.

A dab on the brake pedal when in a traffic queue can be used to signal to the system to disengage the clutch cleanly so with the brake covered you can come to a very smooth stop.  If you were to just take your foot off the gas and not touch the brake, the car would slow and then slip the clutch for longer before stopping - not so smooth.

Leaving the car in 1st at lights will not wear the clutch plates - it should be completely disengaged.  I tend to change to Neutral anyway to protect the bearings etc. these days.  Worth reading the manual about when it automatically selects Neutral just so you know.

Auto and Ice modes will slip the clutch more.

With some experience the cc is effortless, smooth and a thrill to drive - enjoy your practice sessions!

Well im back - heres how it went and a few more questions (sorry)

Train to Euston, collected in an Arnage and taken to dealers premises, Jason is a low volume specialist who worked at lambo for a number of years.

Car was in a unit nice and shiny, i took out my pre authored list of things to ask and check and all was present, all MOT`s, service book stamped up with 3 or 4 majors and 3 or 4 annuals (cant remember) I have a headset in a maser bag, a tool kit and a tyre pumper also

Car is in good condition for 7 years, it has a few chips on the trailing edge of the drivers door and the leading edge of the rear quarter where it meets the bottom of the drivers door as if someone has kicked it getting in. What success rate are smart repairs on maser paint colours ?

Interior looks lived in but ashtray cover aside is very good, the leather will clean up and will be done this weekend.

Car has sat nav, blaupunkt cd changer and a sim card phone - how do i know if I have the better hifi as its pretty low fi but has a graphic equaliser and tone controls and speakers behind your head - it sounds poor though considering the door speakers are so big.

The cubby between the seats has a locking lid but the trim has warped in the sun and you can pull it open sadly, is this common / fixable ?

Ok time to go and Jason starts it up sadly he puts his foot on the throttle not the brake and it roars to life and probably knocked 10k miles off it :o) he backs it out for me in little gobs of movement as I think the clutch was biting / dropping / biting but only for 10 yards. I hop in, attempt to get get comfy and once I am I cant reach the stereo controls on the passenger side or the heater controls so I compromise a little but its still a stretch.

Auto pressed I pull away quite well i thought as it lulls you into a false confidence, pull out of the first turn and all ok, backing off, feeling the car but then motorway rbout to get onto M25, gap - squirt - warp speed - brown trousers - back off again treat throttle with caution.

1st stop at services and i try and stop the sat nav telling me to go to London, fail but I mute it!, I squint at the dull screen and I already have a forum comment mentally prepared about "how the hell do you read this screen" I autotune the radio - it loves radio 3

Anyway I am home - brightened the sceen - stopped the nav - love the car. Permit me the following (i havent read all the manual yet)

I have a cruise warning light - do i have cruise ?
In the glovebox the boot switch, flap switch has a push button right next to them - whats that ?
Cant fathom the voice control - is it JUST for the phone ?
The tyre gunk thing is Sept 09 - does it need to swapped now ?
The fuel cap in alloy lost its middle bit - dealer has ordered a new one - easy swap ?
Big front speakers look easy to swap - any recommendations ?

Thats it for now - off to read the manual some more :o)

What success rate are smart repairs on maser paint colours ? Common problem due to stone chips and the car not having mud-guards. You can get them smart repaired but don't expect a great job...take it to a good bodyshop then have some plastic film fitted...Enzo has a good contact for the latter

Interior looks lived in but ashtray cover aside is very good, the leather will clean up and will be done this weekend.

I have a cruise warning light - do i have cruise ? Was it on in Yellow? if so yes...check the LH stalk
In the glovebox the boot switch, flap switch has a push button right next to them - whats that ? Not sure but the car does have extra roof emergency re-set switch but I don't know where...happy reading
Cant fathom the voice control - is it JUST for the phone ? Yes, but the phone is an option...do you have the phone icon on the screen [antena and strength]?
The tyre gunk thing is Sept 09 - does it need to swapped now ? Yes but you can buy cheeper then Maserati own brand
The fuel cap in alloy lost its middle bit - dealer has ordered a new one - easy swap ?
Big front speakers look easy to swap - any recommendations ? As above

Thats it for now - off to read the manual some more :o)

Enjoy

Today it all went perfectly for 10 mins, perfect takeoff and two lovely well weighted gear changes - so I KNOW it can be done I need more practice.
To my peril I have found holding onto first past 3500 rpm when joining a roundabout is a stupid thing to do as I turn from driver to passenger in a split second !!!! I was shocked at the agressive and sudden "on cam" power band of the engine - new experience for me !!
I hope its sunny this weekend !

I have had mine a month now and still occasionally get caught out by the gear box - but it is mainly a case of user error.

It took me maybe a week or so to learn how to use the paddles properly and smoothly - I went for a long evening drive when some world cup game was on, lovely deserted roads and that is when it all started to make sense.

They are such gorgeous cars - I don't think the novelty will wear off for me and my poor Lotus Elise has been gathering dust in the garage for the past month.

Enjoy the new car!

Second that.

In reverse the clutch always slips.

Nothing more wearing than a couple of miles of tailback on the motorway where you stop start rarely getting above 5-10 mph, on uphill stretches even worse.
